Today is National Chocolate Covered Pretzel Day. And just to add to it, October is National Pretzel Month. Fun facts about pretzels: German children wear pretzel necklaces on New Year’s for good luck, President Bush once choked on a pretzel in office (while watching an NFL game), and until 1935 pretzels were hand-made (workers could twist 40 per minute) but then an machine was invented and it could twist 245 pretzels a minute. But cover them in chocolate and I’m in–salty sweet.

The other day we read about how James writes that the tongue is hard to control. The idea of salty sweet is kind of like that–James writes how can salt water and fresh come from the same spring? He is saying that if we love God, how can we be mean or ignore God one moment, then praise him the next?

10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing…Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

James 3:10 & 14 (NIV)

But later in that same chapter he mentions the wisdom that comes from Heaven, especially the peace-loving. If we seek Godly wisdom, and seek to make peace, the tongue it not as hard to keep watch of is it?

13 Are there any among you who are really wise and understanding? Then you should show your wisdom by living right. You should do what is good with humility. A wise person does not boast….17 But the wisdom that comes from God is like this: First, it is pure. It is also peaceful, gentle, and easy to please. This wisdom is always ready to help people who have trouble and to do good for others. This wisdom is always fair and honest.

James 3:13 & 17 (ERV)

Dear Lord, help me to watch what I say this week. Help me to remember to pray for your help. Teach me how to be humble and to seek wisdom. Amen.
